Why do onions make you cry?

Onions are made of cells just like other plants. The cells are divided into two sections separated by a membrane.One side of the membrane contains an enzyme which helps chemical processes occur in your body. The other side of the membrane contains molecules that contain sulfur.The contents on each side of the membrane when you cut an onion will mix and cause a chemical reaction. This will produce molecules such as ethylsufine which make your eyes water.

To prevent crying when you cut an onion;

• Cut it under a running tap of cold water.

"The sulfur compounds dissolve in water and are rinsed down the sink before they reach your eyes."

• You can also put the onion in the freezer for ten minutes before you cut it.

"Cold temperatures slow down the reaction between the enzyme and the sulfur compounds so fewer of the burning molecules will reach your eyes."

The characteristics of individual beings are passed from one generation to the next in their chromosomes. But it doesn't mean that a person lost it's uniqueness. Each of our parents gives us 23 chromosomes, making 46 in all. That means that we have two versions of our genes, but one is often dominant. We can see the effect of a dominant gene, but the recessive gene is still there and can be passed on to our children.

What are these chromosomes? Chromosomes are tiny threads that are present in all cell apart from our red blood cells. They contain all the information from an en tire person to develop. There is a special pair that actually determines a persons sex.

Short sections of a chromosomes are called genes. Each genes carries the instructions for a specific characteristic such us an eye color, hair color, height and etc. Many of these genes work with other genes, so it is not easy to say what effects they will have. At the moment the mother's egg is fertilized, the genes starts issuing instructions for the molding of a new human being. Every characteristics that we inherited from our parents will be passed through the coding of the genes within the chromosome and will be passed down to the next generation.
